During this year’s Thanksgiving celebration, I had the wonderful opportunity to spend time with my uncle’s canine companions. A petite, older Maltipoo, he suffers from severe separation anxiety and mobility issues. So, when we were walking around the neighborhood on a long holiday, my uncle expertly pinned his son to his chest with a makeshift papoose, the same way you would rock a baby. The little dog enjoyed the experience, taking in the scents and sights from the high vantage point. No doubt he is living a luxurious life. Interestingly, there are countless similarities between dogs and small children. Both require close attention and require caregivers to be aware of the child’s needs through nonverbal cues while taking full responsibility for the child’s well-being. In addition, dogs make very annoying noises when they are stressed, but dogs are the only ones who make up for it with boundless love. This is a quality that is somewhat lacking in babies. Admittedly, I tend to prefer the companionship of dogs without children.
